Biotechnology for Better Life

National Research Center

Cairo, Egypt, 3-5 November 2009

Under Auspices of

Prof. Hany El Nazer

President of National Research Center

Conference Chairman: Prof. Mahmoud Saker

Head of Genetic Engineering& Biotechnology Research Division

Director of Center of Excellence for Advanced Sciences

Co-chairman: Prof. Mahmoud A. Ibrahim,

Deputy Head of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology Research Division

General Secretary: Prof. Nabila Abdel Maksoud

Scope and Objectives:

Nowadays, interdisciplinary research (Biotechnology and Nanotechnology) are the main pillar of SMART economy. Biotechnology is a group of technologies that share two (common) characteristics working with living cells and their molecules and having a wide range of practical uses that can improve our lives. Biotechnology combines disciplines like genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, embryology and cell biology, which are in turn linked to practical disciplines such as chemical engineering, information technology, and biorobotics. The applications of biotechnology are so broad, and the advantages so compelling, that virtually every industry is using this technology.  Most of our problems, such as global warming, desertification, shortage of water resources, epidemic diseases, food shortage …etc are global problems and need networking of research institutions worldwide to tackle such problems. On going research and applications of biotechnology research confirmed that biotechnology revolution has so many fruitful outcomes in almost all aspects of life. Unfortunately, most of the developing countries need much more efforts to benefit from this scientific revolution. Among the problems which hinder benefiting from biotechnology are expensive cost of biotechnology research, lack of public and political acceptance and evacuation of research institutions from highly qualified human resources. This necessitates regular scientific meetings and gathering of scientists and stakeholders to update and exchange knowledge and experience, and to develop some sort of cooperation of mutual benefits. The current conference is one of National Research Center of Egypt efforts to encourage and support such international conferences in biotechnology.
